Northcroft Lido
Northcroft Lido has been a part of West Berkshire's leisure offer for over 150 years.
It was first built as an unheated pool in 1870, extended in 1914, and completely rebuilt in 1937, at which point it was believed to be the largest outdoor pool in the south of England.
The Lido has always been a popular destination for swimmers but has suffered from structural issues for a number of years and was only able to open for a very limited season every year. After the pandemic, West Berkshire Council decided to invest in a major upgrade so that it could be open for longer and offered more facilities.
And so, a new project was born and a wide-ranging redevelopment began which saw over £5m invested in the pool and surrounding area. A splash park and slides were put in to enhance the activities on site and a new refreshment kiosk and beach huts were added. The refurbishment work also included the installation of a hoist and the addition of an accessible changing room so that as many people as possible could enjoy the Lido.
Teams from everywhere in the council were key to the planning and delivery of the Lido as budgets, project plans, the purchase of materials and the sourcing of a contractor all had to come together to get the job done.
So whether you're a leisure officer, a lawyer, an accountant, a communications professional, an engineer or a procurement specialist; a career at West Berkshire Council could give you the opportunity to get involved with exciting projects like Northcroft Lido.
