Climate Change

Welcome to the Council's Climate Change Service!

The Climate Change Service is comprised three high-performing teams (Environment Delivery, Countryside and Waste Management) who deliver projects and actions to help the Council to achieve its objective of taking better care of our beautiful natural environment and reducing the impact of our activities on the climate. West Berkshire is often voted as one of the best places to live and work in the UK, and we are immensely proud to be helping to look after this wonderful natural heritage.

The Council has declared Climate and Ecological Emergencies and central to these declarations are an ambition to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions for activities controlled by the Council by 2030, whilst empowering others within the community to play their own part.

A job within the Climate Change Service is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. You will get to work with diligent, supportive, and positive colleagues who take immense pride in what they do! Whether it is helping to draft strategies about how we protect the local environment, overseeing waste collections and recycling, or keeping public rights of way accessible and safe, our colleagues are making a positive difference in the lives of residents, businesses, and visitors daily. Colleagues also advise elected politicians on potential solutions and help decision makers to deliver beneficial outcomes. The work is impactful and varied, and no two days are ever the same.

If this sounds like something you can get involved in, we want to hear from you!

Highways and Transport

Highways and Transport is responsible for the infrastructure used by road users, and transport services provided by the Council. Within West Berkshire we maintain approximately 1,300km of roads, 830km of footways, 33km of cycleways, 330 bridges, 13,000 street lights and 33,000 road drainage gullies. We review speed limits, provide advice to developers on transport implications, and co-ordinate works on the highway. We also transport over 2,000 people daily to education and social care facilities over 130 contracts, issue 20,000 bus passes for the elderly and disabled, 2,300 parking blue badges, and manage 2,500 parking spaces and 50 fleet vehicles.

Across the service, there are diverse roles for Apprentices, Technicians, Inspectors, Drivers, Civil Enforcement Officers, Engineers and Transport Officers that ensure that all this runs smoothly. Some roles are office-based devising schemes and co-ordinating works and services. Others are out every day enforcing parking restrictions, co-ordinating works on the highway, or driving some of our more vulnerable clients. We have something for everyone.
