Develop Your Career With Us

At West Berkshire Adult Social Care, we are developing training so that all staff are able to grow within their current roles as well as having the opportunity to progress when they are ready to do so. We are able to offer high quality training in the beautiful surroundings of Shaw House, which West Berkshire Council owns. Our recent training programme has been adapted to meet the needs of the changes that Adult Social Care has been through over the last two years. This training has been about staff developing awareness and confidence in applying key legislation in their work such as the Mental Capacity Act and Safeguarding. We have also put on a number of courses on Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, to broaden awareness and understanding of a wide range of conditions.

More recently, West Berkshire has taken on an Apprenticeship Coordinator to ensure we make best use of a levy that is raised to fund apprentices. This scheme covers staff at all levels across the whole service from care staff that are coming into completely new roles in our care homes through to managers who have been with us for some time. The scheme will be used to fund NVQs, Degrees and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) training.

We also continue to develop our relationships with local universities to ensure staff who join us are able to take professional qualifications in Occupational Therapy and Social Work while working with us. Some staff will also support students who are on placement from those universities.

We would want all staff that join us to be able to develop a clear career pathway which will be monitored via their appraisals. Separately, to ensure we are supporting teams across our service to develop their staff, we hold a regular Head of Service Forums (attended by front line workers).
