Staff Travel Options
We're keen to encourage staff to travel sustainably to their usual place of work. We're committed to this aim and to a number of initiatives to help achieve it, all listed within the Staff Travel Plan. Our initiatives support active travel (walking, cycling), public transport, and personal travel options, depending on where you work.
All our staff can apply for an interest-free season ticket loan for regular travel using trains and/or buses. Most of our offices are located near key bus stops or by railway stations, making travel to work using public transport simple and accessible.
If you have flexible working arrangements where a season ticket may not be good value for money, you can make use of a new bus ticketing option. The flexiConnect ticket allows you to block purchase ten one-way journeys for a reduced price. You can use this when you need to.
For staff wishing to walk, run, or cycle to work, we provide private on-site shower and changing rooms with lockers available to store your clothes, shoes, towels and any other items.
Staff who wish to cycle to work but are new to commuting by bike can make use of cycle training, offered in-house through our accredited Cycling Co-ordinator.
All staff based in Newbury can access pool bikes (bikes that can be borrowed for travelling between sites and to close-by locations). Pool bikes are regularly maintained by the council, and are free for all staff to use.
We've teamed up with CycleScheme to allow staff to purchase a new bicycle, cycling accessories and equipment tax-free. You can pay back the loan over a 12 month period through your monthly salary, making a saving on the purchase price through reduced tax, NI and VAT payments.
Our sites offer secure cycle shelters available for staff use only. The shelters include cycle stands to secure your bike to, with these only accessible behind a locked gate. This helps to protect your cycle from theft and also bad weather while you're at work.
Parking is in short supply around our offices, and because of this, we can't give all staff with a car parking space. However, to encourage car sharing we offer priority spaces for those staff that travel to and from work with a travel partner. Staff wishing to car share can apply for a car-sharing permit, enabling them to park closer to work and in designated bays. We also enable staff to register and search for a travel buddy via our online car-sharing portal.
We've recently launched our car club in Newbury, which makes pay-as-you-go cars available for staff to drive for work purposes. Cars are also available for use by staff outside of working hours for personal use, at a reduced rate.
If your role doesn't qualify for an allocated parking space, or you're unable to car share, there is the option of a discounted parking season ticket. The parking ticket allows for discounted parking for Newbury-based staff, which can be purchased in a similar fashion to the bus and rail season ticket, through monthly salary deductions.
Parking is available between January and November only.
Motorcycle and scooter parking is available on-site at most locations. You don't need a permit for this.
